Trail Description
This stunning walk from Pahia to Russell (either direction to suit tides) of approx. 18 km can be undertaken as a full-day hike or as shorter walks along sections of the trails. Use the Komoot map below to determine distances between different points.
From Pahai the trail around the coast to Te Haumi Beach cannot be walked at high tide, and you will need to use Seaview Road.
From Te Haumi, the trail to Opua is a combination of boardwalk and single track that meanders along the coast. If continuing on to Russell, you will need to catch the car ferry. Check out sailing times and costs here: https://northlandferries.co.nz/bay-of-islands-ferry/
The trail from Okaito is a pleasant but, in places, strenuous walk and has sections of bush track and mangrove boardwalks with vistas of the bays that dot this coastline.
From historic Russell you can catch a passenger ferry back to Pahia. Timetables are available here: https://www.russellinfo.co.nz/passenger-ferry-schedule
Note: These are walking tracks only. Bicycles are not permitted
