Connecting Coastal Communities
The Tutukaka Coast Ratepayers and Residents Association hosted a panel discussion – Connecting Our Coast – Tracks and Trails – following our AGM in September 2025. This was aimed at learning more about the needs and aspirations of our community and the experience of others in developing tracks and trails.
Our Community Research (2021) identified a need for better connectivity between our coastal communities and between the coast and Whangarei. There is also a persistent road safety issue and concern for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists using our roads.
There have been previous community efforts and proposals for developing tracks/trails; however, none have come to fruition.
We received positive feedback at the panel discussion. Based on this, we have established a community working group to develop and implement a plan to connect the coast from Sandy Bay through to Whangarei for walking and cycling.
Keeping the bigger vision in mind, the Working Group has chosen to focus on the link between Tutukaka and Ngunguru as Phase 1 of this project.

The Association is established and maintained exclusively for charitable purposes (including any purposes ancillary to those charitable purposes).
About the Association
The Association aims to benefit the Tutukaka Coast by promoting and supporting improved community wellbeing, services and amenities and promoting and supporting efforts to protect, preserve and enhance the natural and physical environment.
The Association may plan for and undertake activities that:
1.4(a) Advocate for and otherwise communicate the needs and best interests of the Tutukaka Coast in local, regional and relevant national decision-making processes;
1.4(b) Develop and maintain relationships with local hapu and iwi and with appropriate local, regional, national authorities and organisations;
1.4(c) Lead and/or support community efforts and action on local issues;
1.4(d) Foster connections, co-ordination and collaboration between the coastal communities and local hapu, iwi and community groups;
1.4(e) Provide information, and otherwise raise awareness to encourage community participation and engagement with the Association, and local decision-making processes;
1.4(f) Any other lawful acts which support the achievement of the association’s aims and promote sustainable solutions to local issues.
