The Tutukaka Coast Ratepayers and Residents Association has established a community working group to develop and implement a plan to connect the coast from Sandy Bay through to Whangarei for walking and cycling.

Whangarei BMX Club is based in the centre of town at 109 Dave Culham Drive, Pohe Island Bike Park. The club has regular club nights in spring and summer and Sprocket training nights once a week.

This group is building a bike-and-walk shared path to connect and make safer a route between Marsden Cove Marina, Ruakaka Town Centre and Marsden Cove Village, taking people away from the dangerous SH 15.
