Design a Helmet Competition

Every year during May we run a ‘Design a helmet’ competition as part of the activities for Road safety Week. The competition is open to all five to twelve year olds across Te Tai Tokerau. The judging panel is made up of people from Bike and Hike Northland, Northland Road Safety Trust, Northland Road Safety team and Creative Northland. The winning designs are transferred by hand by a local artist on to a helmet that they can wear whenever they are out on their wheels.

Many schools get behind the competition as well as individuals. Whilst being fun to do the competition also provides an opportunity to talk about the importance of wearing a helmet. Protecting our heads from injury is super important and in New Zealand we are required by law to wear a helmet when riding a bike. The winning helmets are not only unique but have the added benefit of making the wearer more visible to others. Keep an eye on our social media pages for information about the next competition which will be open in May. Entry forms for the competition each year will be available via this website, through your local bike shop, school, or library.

Check out some of the winning designs we have had over the past few years – they look amazing!
