About Bike and Hike Northland Trust

Previously known as Bike Northland promoting all aspects of cycling across Te Tai Tokerau. The organisation changed from an incorporated society to a charitable trust in late 2025.

The new trust, Bike and Hike Northland, has an expanded scope to benefit the community by promoting active recreation through all forms of cycling and walking in Northland. Specifically:

  • Promoting Northland’s walking and cycling tracks and trails to support economic development opportunities for Northland.
  • Providing leadership and support for community initiatives that promote cycling and walking in Northland;
  • Advocating, promoting and educating the community about the health benefits of cycling and walking and safety;
  • Facilitating the development of shared walking and cycling tracks, trails, and amenities.

We are governed by a voluntary board of Trustees who are all keen participants in these activities and passionate about the Trust’s aims.

We aim to work with the community and local organisations to improve facilities and safety for cyclists and walkers in Northland.

We have worked with Whangarei District Council to help design and develop the Pohe Island Bike Park which provides multiple choices and opportunities for the community to enjoy a wide variety of cycling activities. These include a pump track and a learn-to-ride track. The Bike Park is part of the city network of off-road trails and shared pathways.  In addition, Bike and Hike Northland is part of the Whangarei District Council’s Walking and Cycling Strategy group to ensure that there is a voice for cycling interests.

Bike and Hike Northland has been instrumental in establishing the Bikes in Schools programme in more than 25 schools across Northland. The trust continues to support schools both already with the programme and those looking to implement it assisting schools in obtaining funding, sourcing the components and then the ongoing use of the bikes, resources, and training

Bike and Hike Northland are proactively improving the cycling skills of our tamariki through the delivery of the Bike Ready Cycle skills training. The programme is funded by Northland Road Safety, Whangarei District Council. Bike Ready is a national cycle skills education system and has been developed to help increase the number of people in the community with the confidence and competence to cycle safely.
